          Necco Wafers were invented way back in 1847, when Oliver Chase created a candy cutting machine with which he could mass produce the wafers. During the Civil War, these easy-to-carry confections became a favorite treat of the Union soldiers. In the 1940s, Necco sent packages of their wafers to American soldiers fighting overseas in World War II, and the candy quickly became a favorite abroad as well as back at home. With a history as colorful as their flavors, these little wafers have firmly established themselves as a classically American candy.
